More Than Oriental Splendor: Exchanges in Dress, Design and Culture in the Mediterranean World During the Ottoman Era is Charlotte Jirousek’s most important work, the result of fifteen years of international research and writing. Editors and peer readers have called the scholarship brilliant and original. Indiana University Press will be publishing it, we hope by the fall of 2017.
However, like most scholarly presses, they cannot afford the price of high quality color printing, professional indexing, and the many fees for reprinting the copyrighted images used in this heavily illustrated book. We will be applying for two grants and welcome advice on finding more! But also, if you would like to see this book published, please visit our GoFundMe page and share: http://www.gofundme.com/jirousek
We have just signed a contract with the excellent Indiana University Press to publish Charlotte Jirousek’s More Than Oriental Splendor: Exchanges in Dress, Design and Culture in the Mediterranean World During the Ottoman Era. We expect it to be published in 2017.
This book will be of interest to professionals in fields of dress studies and material culture, as well as a broader audience interested more generally in fashion and cultural history, art historians, and social and cultural historians specializing in both the West and the lands east of the Mediterranean.
Since this is a densely illustrated book, our next task is to raise funds to cover the color printing and the permissions fees for about 300 images. We welcome any advice, and will be posting more soon.
We are pleased to announce that Charlotte Jirousek’s costume collection has been donated to the Cornell University costume collection.
Her ethnographic textile and other collections will go to the Anthropology Collections at Cornell.
We are delighted that Jirousek’s papers, a significant portion of her library and her collections will all be available at Cornell for study by students, faculty and visiting researchers.
